While we’re all working for a return to normalcy, major conventions are issuing restrictions and guidance for their fall events. Two big conventions in early September, PAX West and Gen Con, have already made their guidance clear.

PAX West, running Sept 3 – 6, in Seattle, WA previously planned to rely on face coverings and social distancing. In an announcement Monday, they updated their Health & Safety Information to add proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test requirement. Antigen tests must be taken within 6 hours of events start time while PCR tests are good for 72 hours of the day of entry. They’ll also be comparing vaccination or test results to government-issued ID, so don’t try to duck around it.
These new requirements are in addition to the already announced face covering mandate, reduced capacity, copious directional and spacing marking, and increased sanitation.

Gen Con, moved to September 16-19, is taking a somewhat looser stance than PAX West, but is no less serious about attendee safety. While strongly recommending that all attendees wear masks, Gen Con is requiring all unvaccinated participants wear masks. Vaccinated attendees who would prefer not to wear a mask may present their proof of vaccination and ID at a health check-in station and will be given a wrist bracelet to identify your status to staff. Likewise, people with documented medical conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask or receiving a vaccine may also receive a wristband with medical documentation.
Gen Con will also be following a regime of nightly closure for cleaning, increased spacing, outdoor activities, and a reduce capacity currently set at 60% of normal.
Now, a great deal can change between now and September. Keep your eyes on convention policy. Update your plans as needed. And play your favorite games!
