A while back, Hero Forge announced an upgrade to face customization options. Given that the previous expression options were as limited as monk subclasses, this sounded awesome. And, sure enough, Hero Forge released the beta on Monday for Kickstarter supporters/pro subscribers!
Okay, before we get started with first impressions, I’m gonna stop the go-kart for a second and tell you: don’t click on the beta button just yet.
So, yeah. This thing’s in beta. It’s unfair to expect its A-game. That being said, the conversion/facial customization UI is very jarring at this stage. For example, my warforged rouge/trickery cleric right after I clicked the “accept beta” button–

Okay, pretty stark contrast. But I can customize the face to match the previous one, right?
So…uh…I tried….

Yeah…very lukewarm first impression.
However, this is an objective opinion based on my understanding of something that’s still in beta. However, my main issue is that (as far as I can tell) the original sliders cease being an option once you accept the beta. So if you liked the expression of a character, you could potentially lose it forever. (Plus the new facial part sliders aren’t as appealing as, say, facial part stretching or axis control toggling like other body parts.)
But again, it’s beta. Maybe Hero Forge can still add an option to toggle the original sliders…
Also: new noses!
