Do you and your fellow Planeswalkers wish that Magic the Gathering was just a bit more…Magical? Whimsicle? Had a touch more ‘Bippity Boppity Boo’? Well then, this one is for you.
The internet was set on fire recently as a new trading card game in collaboration with Disney was announced at the D23 Expo this past week. Being called the answer to Magic the Gathering, Lorcana is a new game where players will take on the roles of Illumineers, casting spells and creatures to battle it out against their opponent. Within a short time since it’s announcement, it is already being called one of the biggest trading card games to be released next year.
The first six cards were sold in a D23 Expo Collector’s Set to attendees of the event and they featured staple characters from the Wonderful World of Disney. Malificent, Captain Hook, Elsa, Cruella De Vil, Robin Hood, and Stitch were among those in the first showcased. Each of these cards have a 1st Edition stamp located a the bottom of the card, and the set was sold for $49.99. From what we can see from scans , Hero and Villain cards share many traits from other games such as a play cost, power and toughness, abilities, and flavor text. In addition, there looks to be what seems like a diamond to the right of the cards abilities with no indication of what it’s for. Attendees of D23 were also treated to a seventh card as a 1st Edition Mickey card was handed out to everyone. Fear not if you are wanting to collect this game, the seven cards sold and given out with still be available in the first set when it is released next year.
Publisher Ravensburger are calling this their largest potential collaboration that they have ever had. Previously releasing Disney Villianous, they understand they are asking players to take a multi-year journey with them as they produce sets for the game. They have even gone on to note that Disney has never really allowed any sort of collaboration prior to this, which makes this game an even bigger deal.
At the time of writing this, very little is known about the game and it’s offerings. The hype for it has been noticed all over the internet and everyone is thoroughly excited to see what it has to offer. Having seen myself so many properties come and go such as Wold of Warcraft, Terminator, and Final Fantasy cross over into the trading card game realm, it’ll be interesting to see how Lorcana’s publishers keep the game fresh, interesting, and inviting for old players and new. The first set will be released in the fall of 2023 and will be called Lorcana: The First Chapter.
Keep it posted to the Game Talk Network as we all look forward to new information as we get closer to the release.
